UTICA, N.Y. – Geneva Lloyd '13 scored the eventual game-winner 5:15 into the first period and goalie Kerri Stuart '14 made it stand with 20 saves as the Amherst College women's hockey team wrapped up an important two-win weekend in Upstate New York with an exciting 1-0 triumph at Utica College on Sunday afternoon.

Notching their first shutout of the season in their final game before the New Year, the Lord Jeffs improved to 5-4 with the win while Utica dropped to 4-5. Stuart improved to 3-2 on the year as she notched the fourth clean sheet of her career, allowing Amherst to overcome a 20-18 Pioneer advantage in shots. Utica also had a 6-3 edge in power plays, but Stuart and the Jeff defense held fast, turning away trio of one-up opportunities for the hosts in the third period.

Before fans had time to get comfortable at Utica Memorial Auditorium, Lloyd had staked Amherst to an early lead, tallying her team-best sixth goal of the season on an assist from Tori Salmon '15, the sophomore's league-leading seventh helper of the year. On the play, Salmon took a few steps into the Utica zone before dumping a puck towards the net which Lloyd was able to deflect past Utica goalie Jennifer Hamel '14. With the score, Lloyd moved up to second in the NESCAC with nine total points, while Salmon is tied for third at eight.

After the rest of the first period passed quietly, both teams earned a pair of power plays in the second but came up empty on each. Utica ramped up the pressure in the third, holding an 8-6 edge in shots, but Stuart was the difference for Amherst, as the junior made four clutch saves in the final six minutes in between a pair of unsuccessful Pioneer power plays.

After breaking for the Holidays, Amherst will return to action with a Friday-Saturday NESCAC series at Colby on January 4-5.
