AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College senior goaltender Sinead Murphy has been named NESCAC Women's Ice Hockey Co-Player of the Week for leading the Lord Jeffs during a 3-0-0 week that gave them sole possession of first place in the conference standings.
Murphy posted a 2-0-0 record with a .984 save percentage and 0.50 goals-against average, improving her to 8-2-0 on the season. She stopped 62 shots and allowed only one goal, which helped Amherst increase its win streak to five games.
Amherst's first game of the week resulted in one of the best performances of Murphy's career, as she stopped all 30 shots she faced during a 2-0 win over top-ranked Norwich. The Cadets entered the game with Division III's top-rated offense (5.94 g/gm) and power play unit (38.6%), but Murphy snapped the Cadets' streak of 68 consecutive games without being shut out.
After the Lord Jeffs opened their weekend with a 3-2 win at Connecticut College, Murphy returned to net and made 32 saves during a 2-1 win over the Camels. Twenty-five of her stops came in the second and third periods, before her shutout streak finally came to an end at 151:27.
With only six regular-season games remaining, Murphy leads the NESCAC in both save percentage (.951) and goals-against average (1.10). Her save percentage also ranks second in Division III, while her GAA is the fourth lowest in the nation.
Sharing Player of the Week honors with Murphy is Bowdoin's Kayte Holtz '13, who accounted for the game-winning goal on consecutive nights during a weekend sweep of Williams. Holtz had two goals and an assist during a 4-2 win over the Ephs on Friday, and she added two goals in Saturday's 3-0 shutout.
Murphy and the Lord Jeffs will travel to Williamstown this weekend for a two-game set with the Ephs.
