AMHERST, Mass. – Ellen Swiontkowski '12 scored a pair of goals and Barrett McBride '14 accounted for the game winner during the fifth-ranked Amherst College women's ice hockey team's 3-1 victory over Colby College Saturday afternoon at Orr Rink.

The Lord Jeffs (9-2-0, 6-0-0 NESCAC) fell into a 1-0 hole in the opening period but took the lead for good midway through the third, completing their weekend sweep of the Mules (4-7-1, 1-5-0 NESCAC) and bumping their win streak to three.

Amherst kept pace with Middlebury College (7-0-2, 6-0-0 NESCAC) atop the conference standings. The Jeffs will host the Panthers next Friday and Saturday in a battle for first place, while Colby will resume its conference schedule by hosting Connecticut College in a two-game series next weekend.

The Mules put only two shots on net in the opening period, but one resulted in Lauren Guarente's first goal of the season. Guarente gave the visitors a 1-0 lead at 9:01, with Sylvia Xistris picking up her second assist of the year and Hannah O'Brien recording her first.

Colby's lead would last for five minutes and 17 seconds, as Swiontkowski took a pass from Geneva Lloyd '13 and beat goaltender Brianne Wheeler while the Jeffs were on the power play at 14:18. The teams headed into the first intermission in a 1-1 deadlock, with Amherst holding a 7-2 advantage in shots.

Each team put seven shots on net in the second period, as Amherst was 0-for-3 on the power play and did not commit a penalty of its own. McBride handed the lead over to the Jeffs 10:01 into the third frame, with Courtney Baranek '14 and Melissa Martin '15 recording assists on the play.

With Wheeler pulled in the final moments of regulation, Swiontkowski was able to put the puck in an empty Colby net for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Wheeler (3-6-1) stopped 23 of 25 shots for the Mules, while Kerri Stuart '14 improved to 5-1-0 by making 13 saves.
