UTICA, NY – The Amherst College women's ice hockey team fell to the 8th-ranked Utica College Pioneers to wrap up a long three-game away weekend. The loss drops the Lord Jeffs to 12-5-2 on the season and snaps Amherst's 11-game unbeaten streak.
The Pioneers grabbed a 1-0 lead on the lone goal of the first period with just 2:17 left before the break, when Courtney Bank and Mandy Finkle assisted on a Katie Moss goal. Utica had mostly dominated the run of play in the first period, as they out-shot the Lord Jeffs 13-5.
Utica scored a trio of second period goals to blow the game wide-open, as Deana Wiegand punched home a pair of goals and assisted on the third. Wiegand was assisted by Stephanie Price and Jessica Leclerc on what was the eventual game-winner just one minute into the second frame, and again six minutes later on a short-handed goal.
Amherst was able to beat Utica goaltender Stephanie Yates, 24 saves, in the third period during a power-play for hooking. Lindsey Harrington (Westford, MA) scored Amherst's only goal of the game with assists going to Tes Siarnacki (Gardner, MA) and Elizabeth Ditmore (Excelsior, MN).
Amherst goaltender Krystyn Elek (Summerville, SC) turned away 30 Utica shots in the losing effort.
The Lord Jeffs will have this week off to resume classes, and will return to action Tuesday Feb. 6, when they host Holy Cross for a 7 p.m. start.
