AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's hockey team earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament by winning the NESCAC Championship this past weekend. The invitation marks the first time in program history the school will participate in the exclusive seven-team tournament.
The Lord Jeffs (19-5-3) travel to Rochester Institute of Technology for their first-round match-up on March 10 at 7 p.m.. The RIT Tigers (22-3-2) received an at-large bid after dropping the ECAC East final to Manhattanville, 3-2. The winner of that contest will travel to top-seeded Plattsburgh State for the semifinals on March 16.
In other first-round action, NESCAC rival Middlebury College received an at-large bid and will host Manhattanville, while the NCHA champion Wisconsin-Stevens Point will face MIAC champion Gustavus Adolphus.
Amherst is currently enjoying the best season in program history, and since Dec. 13, 2006, the team is on a 15-1-3 tear, including a trio of overtime wins in the NESCAC Tournament. Amherst took down second-ranked Middlebury on the Panther's home ice to win the conference title in the triple-overtime game.
