WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Amherst College women's ice hockey team dropped their second game of the season this evening, when the traveled west to face their NESCAC and Little Three archrival Williams College. The Jeffs fell behind early, and were unable to equalize, ultimately dropping to 3-2 on the young season.
The two bitter rivals were very evenly matched throughout the opening period of play, until Amherst senior Tes Siarnacki (Gardner, MA) took a checking penalty 9:53 into the first period. It took Williams a mere 0:06 seconds of the ensuing power-play to score the period's only goal. Amherst was able to regain composure, and finish out the first period down only one.
The second period was dominated by Williams, as the Ephs slapped home three unanswered goals over a 1:55 second span, to blow the lead open to 4-0. Amherst fought hard in the third period, finding the net twice on goals from Michelle McGann (New Berlin, WI) and Kate Dennett (Highland Ranch, CO). Points leader Tarasai Karega (Detroit, MI) recorded an assist on both of the Amherst goals.
The goaltending combination of Krystyn Elek (Summerville, SC) and Lindsay Grabowski (Princeton, NJ) recorded 27 saves in the game, while Denise McCulloch (Toronto, ONT) made 33 saves in net for Williams.
Amherst returns to the ice when they face Middlebury on the road at 3:00 p.m.
