PLATTSBURGH, NY – The Amherst College women's hockey team suffered a 4-2 non-conference loss at second-ranked Plattsburgh State University on Sunday afternoon. The loss marks the second straight for the Jeffs as they fell to 8-11, while Plattsburgh St. improved to 20-1.
The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the opening frame on the strength of goals from first-year Keltie Jones and senior Jenn Clarke. The Jeffs broke into the scoring column at the 4:05-mark of the second session as junior Rachel Simon (W. Orange, NJ) used a power-play advantage to find rookie forward Lindsay Harrington (Westford, MA) for her second score of the weekend and 12th score of the season. However, Plattsburgh St. put the game away just over seven minutes later as Clarke fed sophomore Sharis Smith for the eventual game-winner, and first-year Danielle Blanchard added a short-handed insurance tally in the final stanza. Amherst sophomore Meg Quinn (Wakefield, MA) found the net one last time for the Jeffs as senior Renee Sisti (Conventry, CT) and sophomore Katharine Kelly (Shorewood, WI) tallied assists.
Amherst sophomore netminder Stacey Johnston (Kingston, ON) was credited with 31 stops in a losing effort, while Plattsburgh St. senior counterpart Breanne Doyle posted 23 saves.
Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. against non-conference foe UMass Boston.
