WATERVILLE, ME - The Amherst College women's hockey team dropped to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play after a narrow 2-1 defeat at NESCAC foe Colby College on Saturday afternoon.
Colby opened the scoring late in the second period when Laura Anning scored off feeds from Amanda Comeau and Lauren Goethals. The Mules added to their lead five minutes into the final session when Nicole Crocker found the back of the net, converting helpers from Anning and Rebecca Julian.
Amherst senior tri-captain Amanda Mattei (Windsor, CT) and junior defenseman Rachel Simon (West Orange, NJ) dished to Jeff rookie forward Lindsey Harrington (Westford, MA), who tallied her first collegiate goal in the third period to cut the lead to one. The Lord Jeffs were unable muster a tying goal in the final minutes and Colby escaped with the win.
Amherst sophomore netminder Stacey Johnson (Kingston, ON) turned away 24 shots while Colby's Genevieve Triganne made 17 saves.
The Amherst women will look to rebound in their home-opening weekend next Saturday at 4pm and Sunday at 1 p.m., when the Lord Jeffs welcome visiting NESCAC and Little Three rival Wesleyan University to Orr Rink.
