MIDDLETOWN, CT - Amherst College sophomore defender Rachel Simon (West Orange, NJ) tallied a goal and two assists en route to a 4-2 NESCAC women's hockey victory at Wesleyan University on Friday night. Simon upped her team-leading scoring totals to seven goals and 17 assists as the Jeffs improved to 7-9-5 (5-7-3 NESCAC).
Simon helped Amherst to a 1-0 edge with just over five minutes left in the first, finding classmate Meg Dickoff (Minnetonka, MN) for the score, and fellow sophomore Alena Harrison (Westwood, MA) notched her third goal of the season 3:26 into the second session, stuffing home a feed from junior Renee Sisti (Coventry, CT) and sophomore Kirsten Forsberg (Kenilworth, IL). Sisti stretched the lead to three just under six minutes later with a power-play score off Simon's second dish of the night.
Wesleyan finally jumped on the board 21 seconds into the final frame as senior Anna Siliciano (Ithaca, NY) found the net, but Simon tallied an unassisted insurance goal at the 4:12-mark to seal the win. Siliciano found first-year Amanda Nickels (Wilder, VT) for a second Cardinal score, but Wesleyan couldn't overcome the deficit and dropped to 3-17 (1-12 NESCAC).
Amherst sophomore goalie Lindsay Grabowski (Princeton, NJ) collected 25 saves as the Jeffs earned their fourth win in their last five outings, while sophomore Meredith Katz (New Canaan, CT) grabbed 30 for the Cardinals.
Amherst returns to action tomorrow (Saturday) at 7 p.m. at NESCAC rival Trinity College.
