AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's hockey team fell to visiting sixth-ranked NESCAC foe Bowdoin College on Friday night, 4-1. The visiting Polar Bears outshot the Jeffs 44-16 as Amherst fell to 2-4-2 overall and 2-4-1 in conference play, while Bowdoin improved to 6-3-1 (3-1 NESCAC).
Bowdoin jumped on the scoreboard just 1:31 into play as sophomore Katie Forney (Gettysburg, PA) flipped a backhand into the bet. Polar Bear first-year Kristen Cameron (Charlottetown, Prince Ed. Isl.) pushed the lead to 2-0 4:44 later, scoring off a feed from sophomore Meghan Gillis (Whycocomagh, Nova Scotia). Amherst first-year goalie Stacey Johnston (Kingston, Ontario) turned away 20 of her career-high 40 saves in the opening frame, including a pair of clutch breakaway stops.
Gillis tacked on a third goal in the second frame, and first-year Katie Coyne (Madison, WI) notched Bowdoin's final goal 6:19 into in the final period. Amherst sophomore Alena Harrison (Westwood, MA) prevented the shutout with just over two minutes left in regulation as she gathered a pass from classmate Meg Dickoff (Minnetonka, MN) near the blue line, beat a Bowdoin defender on the right side and fired it home for the power-play score.
Bowdoin junior Cat MacEachern (Berwick, Nova Scotia) collected 15 saves in the win.
Amherst returns to action tomorrow (Saturday) at 3 p.m. against visiting NESCAC opponent Colby College.
