MINNEAPOLIS, MN - The Amherst College women's hockey team bowed at non-conference foe Augsburg College 3-2 on Saturday. Junior Renee Sisti (Coventry, CT) notched both Amherst goals as the Jeffs fell to 3-5-3 with the loss.
Augsburg claimed the lead midway through the first period as senior Carrie Velenchenko tallied a rebound goal on assists from first-year Jenny Schmidt and junior Jocelyn Cookson. Sisti tied the game at the 15:19-mark, firing in a wrist shot from the left side off feeds from fellow junior Leah Kaplan (Buffalo, NY) and sophomore Alena Harrison (Westwood, MA). Senior Laura Prasek regained the Aggies advantage with just over two minutes left in the opening frame with a power-play score.
After a scoreless second session, Prasek notched the eventual game-winner just 16 seconds into an Augsburg power play, finding the net off assists from first-year Brittney LeBlanc and senior Melynda Kleewein. The Jeffs pulled back within one at the 5:25-mark as Sisti lit the lamp on assists from junior co-captain Amanda Mattei (Windsor, CT) and sophomore Rachel Simon (West Orange, NJ), but they could not even the score and managed just four shots in the final frame.
Amherst sophomore Lindsay Grabowski (Princeton, NJ) tallied 33 saves, while senior Kristin Johnson collected 18 saves for Augsburg, which improved to 8-4-2 with the win.
Amherst returns to action Monday at 6 p.m. at non-conference opponent the University of St. Thomas.
