AMHERST, MA - Amherst College first-year goalie Stacey Johnston (Kingston, Ontario) nabbed 23 saves, posting a shutout in her first collegiate start, as the women's ice hockey team blanked NESCAC rival Wesleyan University 3-0 on Saturday. Junior Renee Sisti (Coventry, CT) and first-years Elizabeth Ditmore (Excelsior, MN) and Katharine Kelly (Milwaukee, WI) each found the net as the Jeffs improved to 1-0-1 overall and in conference play, while the Cardinals dropped to 0-2-0 (0-2-0 NESCAC).
Sisti notched the game-winning goal after 19 minutes of scoreless play as she put back a rebounded shot from classmate Leah Kaplan (Buffalo, NY). Ditmore tallied her second score in as many days just 34 seconds after the first intermission, taking a breakaway up the right side and beating Wesleyan sophomore netminder Meredith Katz (New Canaan, CT) top shelf. Kelly tacked on the final score at the 6:29-mark of the second frame as sophomore Tes Siarnacki (Gardner, MA) gathered the puck behind her own net and found Kelly in front of the goal for the point-blank score.
The Cardinals tried to rally a comeback in the final period but could not capitalize on a pair of power-play attempts as Johnston turned away eight shots, including a pair of spectacular glove saves. Katz finished with 18 saves for Wesleyan.
Amherst returns to action next Saturday and Sunday with a pair of games at NESCAC foe Hamilton College.
