AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's ice hockey team fell to visiting sixth-ranked NESCAC rival Middlebury College on Friday, 7-0. The Panthers outshot the Jeffs 52-19 and converted three power-play opportunities as they improved to 4-1 (4-1 NESCAC). Amherst first-year goalie Lindsay Grabowski (Princeton, NJ) had 45 saves in the loss as the Jeffs fell to 3-3 (2-3 NESCAC).
Amherst trailed 1-0 at the end of the opening session, as first-year Abby Kurtz-Phelan (Denver, CO) accounted for the Panther's lone score with four minutes remaining in the period. Middlebury's Shannon Tarrant (Brookfield, CT) and Jean Butler (W. Hartford, CT) added second-period goals to press the lead to 3-0, and the Panthers netted four third-period scores to end the game. Middlebury first-year Shannon Sylvester (Randolph, NJ) scored twice in the final period, while fellow rookie Emily McNamara (N. Hampton, NH) and sophomore Liz Yale-Loehr (Ithica, NY) each added one. Sophomore goalie Kate Kogut (Springfield, MA) had 19 saves in net for the Panthers
Amherst returns to action tomorrow at 3 p.m. against visiting NESCAC and Little Three rival Williams College.
