Jeffs Even Record With 6-3 Win at St. Michael's

COLCHESTER, VT - Behind a pair of goals by rookie forward Alena Harrison (Westwood, MA), the Amherst women's ice hockey team improved to 5-5 with a 6-3 non-league win at St. Michael's College on Tuesday night. Junior Alicia Pichard (Chevy Chase, MD) and senior Ali White (Brookline, MA) each added a goal and an assist in the victory.

Amherst opened the scoring late in the opening session, as first-year Rachel Simon (W. Orange, N.J.) took advantage of the Purple Knight's lone penalty of the period. Using even-strength goals by Harrison and White, the Jeffs pushed the lead to 3-0 late in the second period, but St. Michael's finally got on the board as first-year Martha Salois punched in a rebounded shot from classmate Melissa Gagne.

St. Michael's sophomore Halley Grabarz netted a goal early in the final session to make the score 3-2, but Amherst sophomore Leah Kaplan (Buffalo, NY) regained the Jeffs' two-goal lead with her third score of the year. The Purple Knights again pulled within one, as just 46 seconds later, Kasie Scafariello found the net. That was as close as Saint Michael's would get, as Harrison and Pichard scored midway through the frame to complete the scoring.

Amherst first-year netminder Lindsay Grabowski (Princeton, NJ) nabbed 25 saves, while St. Michael's junior Marcy Ring tallied a whopping 62 saves as the Purple Knights fell to 0-11-1.

Amherst returns to action tomorrow at 7 p.m. at non-conference foe New England College.
