AMHERST, MA - Rookie forward Rachel Simon (West Orange, NJ) scored her team-leading 11th and 12th goals of the season on Friday night, leading the Amherst College women's hockey team to a convincing 5-0 shutout win over visiting NESCAC rival Trinity College. The Jeffs moved into a tie with Hamilton College for fifth place in the NESCAC standings and shattered a single-season school record with their 11th win of the season, improving to 11-11 overall and 5-9 in conference play.
First-year netminder Lindsay Grabowski (Princeton, NJ) needed just 14 saves to post her second shutout of the season for Amherst.
Simon opened the scoring just over two minutes into the opening period with a rebound off a wrist shot by fellow first-year Alena Harrison (Westwood, MA), and the Jeffs limited Trinity to just three shots in the first 20 minutes.
Amherst connected twice more in the second, courtesy of a pair of one-timers by first-year defender Tes Siarnacki (Gardner, MA) and Simon off assists by sophomore forward Renee Sisti (Coventry, CT) and senior forward Ali White (Brookline, MA), respectively.
The rout was on in the closing stanza as White backhanded a wrister past Trinity goalie Mimi MacKinnon (Glen Cove, NY) for her 11th goal of the season. Sophomore forward Leah Kaplan (Buffalo, NY) then capped the scoring with a point-blank tally with 2:36 left in regulation, setting the final score at 5-0.
MacKinnon was under siege all afternoon, braving 41 Amherst shots with 36 saves. Trinity dropped to 2-17 overall and remained winless in NESCAC play at 0-13.
The victory was Amherst's most lopsided this season, topping a 5-1 win at Trinity on Nov. 21 and a 5-1 victory over Colby on Jan. 23. The Jeffs have won three of their last four heading into tomorrow's matchup with visiting NESCAC and Little Three rival Wesleyan University. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
