Jeffs Win Home Opener Over Hamilton, 6-4

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's ice hockey team exploded for five first-period goals in its home opener on Saturday en route to a 6-4 win over visiting NESCAC foe Hamilton College. Amherst senior Ali White (Brookline, MA) lit the lamp twice, while fellow senior Elissa Landes (Potomac, MD), sophomore Leah Kaplan (Buffalo, NY) and first-years Emily Cronin (Arlington, MA) and Rachel Simon (West Orange, NJ) each added a goal as the Jeffs improved to 2-1 (2-1 NESCAC).

White started the rally with an unassisted goal just 2:12 after the puck dropped. Senior co-captain Tory Serues (Cambridge, MA) and sophomore Amanda Mattei (Windsor, CT) found Kaplan at the 3:50-mark for her second goal of the year. White struck again, off junior Alicia Pichard's (Chevy Chase, MD) first assist of the season, for her third goal of the year, and just 17 seconds later Landes pushed the Jeffs lead to 4-0 off an assist from Simon. Cronin capped the first-period scoring with the game-winner, tickling the twine off Serues' second assist of the game. Simon added an insurance goal, unassisted, on a power play just 5:24 into the second period, but the visiting Continentals began to mount a comeback as sophomore Zoe Baldwin (Nepean, Ontario) netted their first goal of the game at the 5:52 mark. Amherst first-year goal Lindsay Grabowski (Princeton, NJ) was outstanding, collecting nine of her 26 saves in the second session, including an acrobatic diving save with about five minutes remaining in the period.

Hamilton continued its rally, using a second score by Baldwin, and goals from sophomore Jane Bradley (Casselman, Ontario) and first-year Lindsay Bartz (Irvine, CA), but fell short as the Jeffs killed five penalties in the final session. Hamilton first-year goalie Caitlin Connelly (Cheltenham, PA) posted 29 saves in the loss as the Continentals fell to 0-1 (0-1 NESCAC).

The two teams meet again tomorrow at Noon at Amherst's Orr Rink.
