Jeffs Fall to UMass Boston, 4-2

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's hockey team fell to visiting non-conference opponent UMass Boston on Wednesday night, 4-2. UMass Boston used three first-period goals and 37 saves from first-year goalie Amanda Boucher (Billerica, MA) as the Beacons improved to 10-9-1. Amherst sophomores Amanda Mattei (Windsor, CT) and Renee Sisti (Coventry, CT) each netted a goal for the Jeffs, who dropped to 10-11 with the loss.

The visitors capitalized on turnovers for their first two scores as first-year Andrea Ciarletta (Watertown, MA) found fellow rookie Melissa Belmonte (S. Boston, MA) on a breakaway for the first goal, and junior Jenn Murray (Avon, MA) picked up a loose puck behind her own net and fed Ciarletta in front of the net for the 2-0 lead. Amherst answered as Mattei launched a slap shot from the left face-off circle and netted an unassisted power-play goal at the 18:59-mark. However, the Beacons responded as Murray found the net unassisted just 24 seconds later, ending the first period with a 3-1 advantage.

Amherst dominated play in the second frame allowing UMass Boston just two shots on goal, not relinquishing the first attempt until the 14:00-mark. However, the Jeffs could not find the net as Boucher was a perfect 14-for-14 in the period. Amherst tried to mount a comeback in the final session as senior co-captain Amanda Muller (Princeton, NJ) fed first-year Alena Harrison (Westwood, MA), who turned and flipped the puck to Sisti just outside the crease. Sisti snuck the puck past Boucher to cut the lead to one with her 10th score of the year. Unfortunately, Beacon first-year Calli Beskosty (Tyngsboro, MA) tacked on an insurance tally at the 10:14-mark to push the lead back to two and cap the scoring.

Amherst first-year Lindsay Grabowski (Princeton, NJ) collected 16 saves in net.

Amherst returns to action Friday at 4 p.m. against visiting NESCAC foe Trinity College.
