AMHERST, MA - After notching its first victory of the season against Wesleyan University on Friday, the Amherst College women's hockey team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime loss to visiting NESCAC foe Trinity College Saturday afternoon at Orr Rink. Bantam sophomore forward Kristy Hadeka (Castleton, VT) stuffed home a rebound 3:16 into the extra session to propel the visitors to the win.
Trinity drew first blood 33 seconds into the second period when Hadeka gathered a rebound and slid the puck past Jeff senior netminder Heidi Alexander (Edina, MN). Moments later, Amherst countered when sophomore forward Sarah Mason (Minneapolis, MN) retrieved the puck from the boards and skated into the slot, firing a right-handed wrister into the back of the net, knotting the score at 1-1 heading into the third.
The Jeffs took the lead 9:19 into the final period of regulation when senior forward Danielle Williams (Needham, MA) hit the top corner on a breakaway. Shortly thereafter, Bantam rookie forward Tara Borawski (Simsbury, CT) netted a breakaway goal of her own, lifting a backhander past Alexander. Hadeka tallied the game-winner as Trinity improved to 2-7-1 overall and 2-7-1 in conference play, while the Jeffs dropped to 1-7-3 and 1-5-2.
Alexander finished with 30 saves while Bantam junior Mimi Mackinnon (Glen Cove, NY) notched 34. Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. at NESCAC rival Hamilton College.
