AMHERST, MA - Despite outshooting its opponent by a whopping 62-20 margin, the Amherst College women's hockey team fell to visiting non-conference foe New England College, 1-0, Wednesday night at Orr Rink. Pilgrim first year forward Marissa Porri (Lynbrook, NY) notched the lone goal, while classmate goalie Christina Aiello (Vail, CO) was stellar in net, finishing with 62 saves to earn the shutout.
The Jeffs kept the visitors pinned in their own end for most of the opening period. However, the Pilgrims broke the ice when Porri tallied her team-leading 11th point, firing a low wrister on a breakaway past Jeff senior netminder Heidi Alexander (Edina, MN). Amherst senior forward Danielle Williams (Needham, MA) ripped a rocket off the right post shortly thereafter, and rookie forward Renee Sisti (Coventry, VT) also found the iron 12 seconds into the third period. The hosts pulled Alexander with 1:15 remaining but failed to net the tying goal. Alexander turned aside 19 shots.
With the loss, the Jeffs drop to 1-14-4 overall while New England improves to 3-16. Amherst now has four games remaining on its regular season slate, all at home. The Jeffs - currently in eighth place in league play - return to action Friday at 7 p.m. against visiting NESCAC foe Bowdoin College, which enters the week ranked second nationally.
