Jeffs Drop Season-Opener at Middlebury, 9-0

MIDDLEBURY, VT - The No. 1 ranked Middlebury College women's hockey team picked up right where it left off last season, extending its league unbeaten streak to 113 games (112-0-1) with a lopsided 9-0 shutout win over visiting Amherst College in both teams' season-opener on Friday night. The host Panthers also extended their home winning streak to 77 games and their Division III unbeaten streak to 125 games (123-0-1) with the win.

Angela Kapus opened the scoring with a wrist-shot from just inside the right face-off circle. Catherine Elkins made it 2-0 with a shot from the slot, before Erin Neil gave the Panthers a 3-0 lead with a wrap-around goal. Middlebury added four second period goals and two more in the third to set the final score at 9-0.

Erin Neil finished the game with a pair of goals, Kapus added two goals and two assists, while Amber Neil pitched in with a goal and two assists. Megan Hutchinson tallied two saves in goal for the shutout, while Amherst junior Heidi Alexander finished with 32 saves in defeat.

Amherst's schedule doesn't get much easier, traveling to second ranked Williams College for a 3 p.m. tilt on Saturday.
