Women's Hockey Drops Heartbreaker to Holy Cross, 4-3

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's hockey team fell victim to a game-winning tally by Holy Cross sophomore forward Elizabeth Campbell (Milton, MA) with just 5:32 left in regulation, en route to a 4-3 loss Wednesday night at Orr Rink. Sophomore defender Elissa Landes (Potomac, MD), first-year defender Sarah Mason (Minneapolis, MN), and first-year forward Ellie Roe (Edina, MN) each finished with a goal and an assist for the Jeffs.

Amherst opened the scoring early in the first period when Landes registered her first goal of the season, wristing a right-handed lazer into the back of the net. Holy Cross followed shortly thereafter, when sophomore defender Lindsey Jean (Peabody, MA) blasted a one-timer through the legs of junior goalie Heidi Alexander (Edina, MN). Roe then answered for the Jeffs, stuffing in a rebound at 9:12. Crusaders first-year defender Meghan Mahoney (Utica, NY) quickly countered, shooting a wrister into the top corner of the net, to end a wild opening period. Sophomore defender Caitlin Andrew (S. Burlington, VT) had a shot deflect in from the point for the only goal of the second period, giving the visitors a 3-2 lead heading into the third.

Mason notched a goal early in the final period, with a quick wrister from the slot, to even the score at 3-3. Campbell then scored the game-winner just moments later giving the Crusaders the victory. With the loss the Jeffs fall to 2-5, while Holy Cross improves to 3-4-1.

Amherst returns to action Friday at 7:30 p.m. at NESCAC rival Trinity College.
