Williams Leads Amherst Past Conn., 2-1, in Home Opener

AMHERST, MA - Junior forward Danielle Williams (Needham, MA) wristed home the game-winner with just 2:10 left in regulation as the Amherst College women's hockey team edged visiting NESCAC rival Connecticut College, 2-1, in its home opener on Saturday, notching their first win of the season and improving to 1-2 overall. Junior Amherst goaltender Heidi Alexander (Edina, MN) posted 20 saves en route to the victory.

Williams played the hero in a game that, late in the third period, seemed destined for overtime. With the score tied 1-1, first-year defender Lauren Caldwell (Cranbury, NJ) dug the puck out of Amherst's end and flipped it to sophomore Katie Potter (Ridgewood, NJ), who fed Williams all alone ahead of the Conn. College defense. The co-captain found herself one-on-one with Camel senior goaltender Anna Trafton (Topsham, ME) and used a pair of fakes before stuffing a wrist-shot into the top left corner of the net. The goal was Amherst's second of the season after a pair of shutout losses at conference rivals Middlebury and Williams Colleges, the top-two ranked teams in the nation. Caldwell was credited with her first career assist on the game-winner.

After a scoreless opening stanza, Amherst drew first blood 6:40 into the second period when sophomore forward Tory Serues (Cambridge, MA) scored off Trafton's left shin pad, after a pair of assists by Williams and Potter. The lead would last until just after the second intermission as Conn. College junior forward Caley Boyd (New Canaan, CT) knotted the score with a breakaway goal following a faceoff in Amherst's end.

Trafton finished with a game-high 30 saves for Conn. College, which fell 0-2 with the loss. Amherst and Conn. will square off at Orr Rink again on Sunday at 3 p.m.
