Jeffs Stunned by Visiting NESCAC Rival Hamilton, 5-4

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst women's hockey team returned to action after a 33-day layoff and dropped a 5-4 decision to NESCAC foe Hamilton College Saturday evening at Orr Rink. Sophomore forward Eden Self (Rochester, NY) and first-year forward Marissa Halligan (West Haven, CT) each tallied a pair of goals and assists for the visiting Continentals, who improve to 4-6 overall and 3-4 in conference play, while Amherst fell to 3-7 and 3-6.

The Jeffs pierced the scoring column 4:13 into the first period when first-year defender Sarah Mason (Minneapolis, MN) found the back of the net off a feed from sophomore defender Elissa Landes (Potomac, MD). Hamilton quickly countered with a trio of goals by Halligan, Self, and first-year forward Jessica Morin (Colchester, VT) to take a 3-1 lead heading into the second period.

Amherst then evened the score at 3-3 with a pair of power play goals with sophomore forward Allison White (Brookline, MA) firing a shot into the back of the net with 31 seconds remaining in the second and senior defender Hilary Zwerdling (Shrewsbury, MA) also tickling the twine 4:15 into the third period. Self scored her second goal of the game moments later, off a feed from Halligan, giving the Continentals a 4-3 advantage midway through the third. The Jeffs would answer back on the power play 13:54 into the period, when first-year forward Annie Grabowski (Princeton, NJ) tallied her second goal of the season. Halligan scored the game-winner with 16 seconds left in the contest giving the Continentals their fourth victory.

Amherst returns to action Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. against visiting Southern Maine.
