AMHERST, Mass. – Senior guard Hannah Fox '20 became the 19th member of the Amherst College women's basketball 1,000 point club in Amherst's 60-49 victory over #22 Ithaca College in the first game of the Women's Basketball Tip-Off Classic at LeFrak Gymnasium.
Fox scored a game-high 21 points to help Amherst improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Bombers fall to 1-2 overall.
Needing 19 points to reach the milestone, Fox scored nine points in the opening quarter and had 13 points by half, in which Amherst led 31-25. She was one of three Mammoths to score in double-figures, joined by Gabrielle Zaffiro '22, who had 15 points and three steals, and Courtney Resch '22, who scored 14 points and dominated the paint with 15 rebounds and four blocks.
She reached 1,000 on the front end of two made free throws with 1:23 left to play in the game, putting Amherst up 58-44.
Amherst led by just one point after the first quarter and six at the break. Ithaca was within three points late in the third quarter when Cassidy O'Malley made a pair of free throws, but two free throws and a block by Resch which led to two more Amherst points helped the Mammoths take a 49-42 lead into the final period.
Resch made it a ten-point lead for the first time in the second half at 4:51 to play and the lead never dipped into single digits after that. Fox scored the final six points for Amherst, as they took their biggest lead of 14 points with just over two minutes left in regulation. Amherst shot just 1-10 in the final quarter but were 9-10 at the foul line, on their way to shooting 18-21 at the stripe. Ithaca was just 5-15 on free throw attempts.
O'Malley led the Bombers with 14 points, while Grace Cannon and KellyAnne O'Reilly both just missed a double-double. Cannon had ten points and O'Reilly scored 12 points, including 2-5 from three-point range, with each recording nine rebounds and a block.
In the opening quarter, Fox led all scorers after scoring nine of the Mammoths first 14 points. Fox was 4-8 from the field and 1-1 from downtown heading into the second quarter. The Mammoths were in front by one point (14-13) as O'Malley led the Bombers with six points through the opening 10 minutes.
Amherst created distance in the opening three minutes of the second quarter, going on a 8-0 run before a pair of threes from Megan Yawman and Cara Volpe as well as a jump shot from Grace Cannon brought the Bombers back to within one (22-21).
Zaffiro tallied five points in the waning minutes of the second quarter to lift the Mammoths over the Bombers heading into the break. Five points shy of her milestone, Hanna Fox led all scorers with 13 points while Resch owned the boards with five.
The Mammoths held the bombers leading scorer in the first half, O'Malley, to 0 points in the second quarter while Kelly Anne O'Reilly finished the half with a team-high seven points.
The Mammoths will finish the 2019 Amherst Women's Basketball Tip-Off Classic when they take on Babson on Monday, November 23th at 5:00 PM. Ithaca will face Babson first in tomorrow's action at LeFrak Gymnasium, with tip-off scheduled for 2:00 PM.
