AMHERST, Mass. – The two-time defending national champion Amherst College women's basketball team will host the opening weekend of the 2019 NCAA Division 3 tournament this Friday and Saturday at LeFrak Gymnasium.
Amherst (23-3) is an at-large selection as they make their 12th straight appearance in the big dance. With an all-time record of 45-11, Amherst has been to the Final Four eight times, including streaks from 2009-13 and 2016-18.
The Eagles (19-8) earned the automatic bid by capturing their fourth consecutive North Atlantic Conference (NAC) championship. The top-seed, Husson becomes the first school in NAC history to win four-straight women's basketball titles and have six overall, the most in the history of the conference.
Amherst and Husson have met once before in the NCAA tournament. On the way to their first national championship in 2011, the Purple and White defeated the Eagles 102-44 in the opening round.
The winner of Friday's opening round game will advance to the Regional final on Saturday at LeFrak. They will meet the winner of Geneseo vs Vassar.
SUNY Geneseo (23-4) were downed in overtime of the SUNYAC championship game by New Paltz but have a strong enough resume to earn an at-large bid. The Knights are making their fifth straight appearance in the national tournament.
Vassar (21-6) also earn an at-large bid despite falling to RIT in the semifinals of the Liberty League tournament. The Brewers are looking to improve on the third 21-plus win season in program history.
More information including game times, ticket info and a full preview all of four teams will be available later on this week.
