NCAA Sectionals Tournament Central & Teams Preview

AMHERST, Mass. -- Amherst College will host an NCAA women's basketball regional with two games on Friday, March 9 and one game on Saturday, March 10 at LeFrak Gymnasium. Amherst will host Montclair State, with the winner taking on the winner of University of Rochester vs Rochester Institute of Technology.

3165 No. 1 Amherst College Mammoths (29-0, NESCAC Champions)

Location: Amherst, Mass.
Coach: G.P. Gromacki (11th season, 326-24 since joining Amherst)

Tournament History: The defending national champions captured their third straight NESCAC championship over Tufts University this year. Amherst then took down Becker and then St. Joseph's (Maine) to advance to the Sweet 16. Amherst is making their eleventh straight NCAA Tournament appearance, where they have a record of 41-11 with two national championships and seven NCAA Final Four trips. They have won 62 straight games heading into this weekend, this year eclipsing the previous program record of 50. 

What to Know About the Mammoths: 
Amherst is the top defensive team in the country, allowing 38.2 points per game and holding opponents to 27.6 percent shooting from the floor. Amherst averages 61.1 ppg on 43% shooting. NESCAC All-Conference Players Madeline Eck '20 and Hannah Fox '20 lead the Mammoths offensivly with 11.9 and 11.2 ppg, respectivly. 

No. 22 Montclair State Red Hawks (25-3, NJAC Champions)

Location: Montclair, N.J.
Coach: Karin Harvey (11th season, 222-66 at Montclair State heading into this weekend)

Tournament History: The Red Hawks captured their sixth straight NJAC Championship with a 58-51 win over The College of New Jersey. Montclair State then defeated SUNY Old Westbury and Gettysburg to advance to the Sweet 16 to play Amherst. The Red Hawks are back in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2015. 

What to Know About the Red Hawks: Montclair State averages 65.2 points per game with a scoring margin of +13.1. The Red Hawks only three losses of the season came at away games. The Red Hawks are led by senior Katie Sire who averages 21.7 ppg on 51% shooting. She and coach Harvey earned NJAC POY and COY honors. 

No. 16 University of Rochester Yellowjackets (23-4, University Athletic Association runner-up)

Location: Rochester, New York
Coach: Jim Scheible (18th season, 344-150 at University of Rochester entering the weekend)

Tournament History: The Yellowjackets earned an at large bid into the NCAA Tournament after finishing second in the UAA. Rochester defeated Stevens Institute of Technology and Marymount en route to the Sweet 16 in Amherst. This is the Yellowjackets' second trip to Amherst for the Sweet 16 in the past three years. 

What to Know About the Yellowjackets: The Yellowjackets are playing cross-town rival RIT in the Sweet 16. These two teams are familiar with one another, as they squared off in a tournament game in early December. The result was a Rochester win over RIT, 78-68, moving the Yellowjackets to 25-1 all-time against the Tigers. Rochester has a +12.5 scoring differetial this season. They are led offensvily by Alexandra Leslie and Lauren Deming who average 15.2 and 13.2 ppg respectively. 

Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers (23-6, Liberty League runner up)

Location: Rochester, New York
Coach: Amy Reed (10th season, 133-118 at RIT entering the weekend)

Tournament History: The Tigers appeared in their third striaght Liberty League championship game but fell short to Skidmore. They earned an at large bid, their second in as many seasons. RIT captured their first ever NCAA Tournament win over University of New England, before knocking off host, The College of New Jersey, to advance to the Sweet 16 in Amherst. They'll take on familiar foe, Unviersity of Rochester to see who will advance to the Elite 8. 

What to Know About the Tigers: RIT averages 71.1 ppg on 42.7% shooting. They also have four players who double digit points. Jessica Glaz and Cori Okada lead the way averaging 14.1 and 13.4 ppg respectivly. Tara Lynch averages 12.2 ppg on 46% shooting. Sabrina Wolfe averages 10.7 ppg and 5 rebounds. RIT is 5-0 in neutral sites this season and 0-1 against Rochester already this year.
