Strong Third Quarter Lifts No. 2/2 Women’s Basketball Past Emmanuel, 69-40

BOSTON, Mass. – The No. 2/2 Amherst College women's basketball team used a 19-point effort from Meredith Doswell '17 and the Purple & White scored 28 points in the third quarter to help seal a convincing, 69-40 victory over Emmanuel College in Tuesday evening's non-conference women's basketball game at Andy Yosinoff Court in Boston, Mass.

With the win, Amherst improves to 4-0 on the season, while Emmanuel moves to 1-3 overall. The Purple & White return to action, Thursday, Dec. 1 when they host Eastern Connecticut State University at 7 p.m. at LeFrak Gymnasium.

The opening quarter saw the teams play to an early 4-4 deadlock, before Amherst's Hannah Hackley '18 swished a three-pointer – the first of her two in the period – as visitors bolted out to a 15-8 lead. Hackley added a layup with 3:03 remaining in the stanza, before Kayla Weaver converted a three-point play to make it 17-11. A Madeline Eck '20 bucket in the paint lifted the Purple & White's advantage to 19-11 with 2:08 to play in the first quarter and neither team was able to score for the duration of the frame as Amherst held an eight point lead after 10 minutes of play.

In the second quarter, Jaimie Renner '17 powered in a fast-break layup, before Ali Doswell '17 was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all three free throws to help give Amherst a 24-11 lead at the 8:01 mark. Alisha Fox swished a triple on the ensuing possession before Eck hit back-to-back jumpers to give the Purple & White a 28-14 lead. From there, the Purple & White defense held Emmanuel to just seven points as a pair of Meredith Doswell free throws with 25 seconds left in the half set the score to 35-21 at intermission.

Amherst used a 9-0 run to start the third quarter, highlighted by a trey and a free throw from Hackley, A layup and free throw by Eck, and a bucket underneath by Meredith Doswell to help the visitors post a 44-21 lead just two minutes into the third session. Meredith Doswell finished with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting (including a three-pointer and two foul shots) in the third quarter as Amherst outscored the Saints, 28-9 in the frame.

In the fourth quarter, Emmanuel held a 10-6 edge thanks to four points from Alexis Ezell and two each from Talia Roth and Tatijana Ferguson, while Jenna Schumacher '18 and Hannah Fox '20 combined for Amherst's six points in the final 10 minutes of action.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Amherst shot 32.8% from the floor and 80% from the free throw line, held a 48-31 lead in rebounds, notched a 23-2 differential in points off turnovers, scored 16 second chance points, and held a 34-22 lead in points in the paint.
  • Meredith Doswell led all players with 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field, including 5-of-6 from the stripe in addition to hauling in nine boards. Hackley added 14 points on the strength of three three-pointers and added eight rebounds. Eck chipped in 11 points and dished out three assists.
  • Emma McCarthy finished with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds off the bench, while Ali Doswell finished with seven points and four helpers.
  • Weaver finished with nine points for Emmanuel, while Roth added five. Mary McCarthy and Jen Chalk led the Saints on the glass with five boards apiece.
