AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 2 Amherst College women's basketball team held Babson College to just six points in the third quarter, and received a 17-point effort from Jaimie Renner '17 as the Purple & White earned a hard-fought, come-from-behind win over the Beavers in the championship game of the Amherst Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament Sunday afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium.
With the win, Amherst improves to 2-0 on the season, while Babson moves to 1-1 overall. The Purple & White return to action Tuesday, Nov. 22 for a Little III matchup at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
Trailing 41-34 at intermission, Amherst's Madeline Eck '20 and Babson's Jennifer Narlee exchanged buckets, before Ali Doswell '17 swished a three-pointer to pull the Purple & White to within four at 43-39. Eck then hit the backend of two free throws, and Renner canned a trey to knot the game at 43-43 at the 5:57 mark. A Hannah Hackley '18 layup with 3:10 on the clock in the third quarter evened the game at 47-47, before a basket underneath by Emma McCarthy '19 with 1:47 remaining gave the hosts a 49-47 edge heading to the final stanza.
The Beavers used a pair of made free throws by Narlee and Taylor Russell which gave Babson a 51-49 lead, but Amherst responded as Renner canned back-to-back triples with the second coming on the fast break following a steal by Meredith Doswell '17 which gave the Purple & White a 55-51 advantage. Two-point buckets by Russell, Elizabeth Lane and Emily Bonafacic tied the score at 57-57 with 4:12 remaining in regulation. Less than two minutes later, Giovanna Pickering powered in a layup to level the game once more at 59-59, but Amherst pulled away as McCarthy made a layup and forced a turnover that setup Hackley with a fast break basket to make it 63-59 with 1:44 on the clock. Ali Doswell then nailed a trey to set the score at 66-59 to help seal the game as the Purple & White closed out the 67-62 victory.
Amherst held a slim, 21-19 lead after 10 minutes of action, before Babson responded by outscoring the Purple & White, 22-13 in the second quarter to post a 41-34 cushion at halftime. Pickering led the Beavers with 12 points in the first half, while Russell and Brenna LeGacy chipped in eight each. Eck tallied nine points, while McCarthy registered eight points in the first half.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Amherst held a 41.3%-37.9% edge in field goal percentage, and a 42.9%-37.5% advantage in three-point efficiency. The Purple & White also held a 14-6 differential in points off the bench.
- Renner was 6-for-10 from the field and 4-for-5 from beyond-the-arc en route to her game-high 17 points. McCarthy added 14 points off the bench on 7-of-11 shooting, while Ali Doswell followed with 13 points highlighted by three treys. Eck and Hackley followed with 12 and 11 points respectively.
- On the glass, Hackley hauled in a team-best nine rebounds, while McCarthy added eight. Meredith Doswell collected six boards and four blocked shots, while Hackley swatted three shots. Hackley also dished out six assists and finished with three steals.
- Pickering finished with a team-high 16 points for Babson in the losing effort, followed by 14 points from Russell and 10 from Lane. Narlee added eight points and a game-best 11 rebounds, while Pickering chipped in seven boards. Lane handed out four of the Beavers' nine assists.
