Jeffs Fall to Bates, 73-57

February 1, 2003

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College women's basketball team led 34-29 at the half but ended up losing by 16 points on Saturday, falling to visiting NESCAC rival Bates College 73-57. The Bobcats used an 18-2 run at the start of the second half to ice the Jeffs and improve to 9-5 (3-2 NESCAC) on the season. Amherst fell to 10-8 (1-5 NESCAC) with its seventh loss in its last eight games.

The Jeffs led by as many as nine points in the first half thanks to a 10-0 flurry midway through the period. Junior sharpshooter Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) keyed the barrage with a pair of three-pointers, while rookie forward Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) added a layup and a baseline jumper.

Amherst point guard Sara Bozorg (Amherst, MA) left the game with an ankle injury shortly thereafter, however, and the Jeffs went on to commit 16 turnovers in the first half, helping fuel Bates' comeback.

Junior Marissa McGuire (Minneapolis, MN) started the second half with a foul line jumper for a 36-31 Amherst lead, but a six-minute scoring drought ensued. At the same time Bates hit everything during its backbreaking 18-2 eruption. Senior forward Carla Flaherty (Gorham, ME), who entered the game as the NESCAC's second-leading scorer and poured in 18 points on Saturday, scored six unanswered points during one stretch before leaving the game with her fourth personal foul.

Flaherty, sophomore Olivia Zurek (Arlington, MA) and junior Lauren Dubois (Beverly, MA) combined to score 58 of Bates' 73 points. Zurek led the way with 23 points on 8-for-9 shooting. Dubois added 16.

Russell was the lone Amherst player in double figures with 15 points. Senior forward Sarah Walker (W. Hartford, CT) chipped in with six points and a game-high nine rebounds in the loss.

Amherst returns to action Thursday at 7 p.m. against visiting non-league foe Clark University.
