January 18, 2003

AMHERST, MA - Riding the momentum of a 75-48 victory at Trinity College on Friday night, the seventh-ranked Bowdoin College women's basketball team improved to 12-1 (2-0 NESCAC) with a decisive 91-61 win at Amherst College (9-4/0-2 NESCAC) on Saturday.

The only thing that slowed Bowdoin was a rickety bus that delayed the Polar Bears' arrival, causing the game to start 30 minutes late. Bowdoin led the entire game, shooting 53.2% (33-for-62) from the floor and a whopping 95.8% (23-for-24) from the free throw line. They also outrebounded the Jeffs 41-25, including a 28-16 margin on the defensive glass.

Bowdoin senior forward Kristi Royer (Lewiston, ME) led all scorers with 22 points on 8-for-9 shooting and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Teammate Erika Nickerson (Benton, ME) followed suite with 20 points and six boards, while Justine Pouravelis (Orchard Beach, ME) and Lora Trenkle (Surry, ME) added 10 points each.

Amherst placed three players in double figures - first-year Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA), junior Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) and senior Sarah Walker (W. Hartford, CT), who finished with 15, 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Amherst returns to action Tuesday night for a non-league matchup against visiting Wesleyan University.
