February 14, 2003

NEW LONDON, CT - Conn. College senior Margaret Guernsey (Essex, CT) exploded for a career-high 30 points, and added eight rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Amherst College women's basketball team (12-10, 2-6) defeated the Camels (4-16, 0-8) 76-61 Friday night in Luce Fieldhouse. The win was Amherst's second straight after Thursday's 68-46 non-league victory over visiting Springfield.

Guernsey shot 16-for-18 from the foul line, draining 23 of her points in the second half. Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) led the visiting Jeffs with 22 points, shooting 9-for-16 from the field. Sarah Walker (West Hartford, CT) chipped in with a double-double for Amherst, netting 16 points with 14 boards and five blocked shots. Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) added 17 points off the bench for the Jeffs.

Amherst jumped out to a quick 13-4 lead and opened up a 33-15 advantage with 3:16 to play in the half. The Jeffs shot 53% in the first half, and Russell was 5-for-7 from the field in the opening 20 minutes. The second stanza started in similar fashion as the Jeffs quickly pushed the lead to 24 with an early 6-0 run. Russell capped the flurry with an jumper and Amherst held a 43-19 lead with 18:20 to play.

The Camels cut into the deficit, executing a 15-2 run of their own to pull within 12 points at 50-38 with 10:31 to go. That was as close as they would get, however, as Amherst continued to click from the perimeter, closing out the 76-61 victory.

The Jeffs wrap up their NESCAC regular season slate Saturday at 3 p.m. at Little Three rival Wesleyan University.
