AMHERST, MA - After falling to Bowdoin College 91-61 on Saturday, the Amherst College women's basketball team suffered its fourth straight loss, dropping a 64-58 decision to Little Three rival Wesleyan University in a non-league matchup Tuesday night at Lefrak Gymnasium. Amherst junior guard Marrisa McGuire (Minneapolis, MN) tied career-highs with 12 rebounds and three steals while blocking a career- and game-high five shots in the loss.
The Jeffs shot 50.0% (15-for-30) from the floor in a first half that saw 10 different lead changes. Junior sharpshooter Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) gathered a long rebound and knocked down a trifecta from the left wing, giving Amherst a 36-34 advantage at the break.
Senior forward Sarah Walker (W. Hartford, CT) hit a runner in the lane with 15:47 remaining to put the Jeffs up, 42-40. Amherst then went 10:47 without a field goal, during which time the Cardinals took a 53-49 lead with the help of an 8-0 run. Walker scored on a lay-up with 5:05 left on the clock to end the Amherst draught. Moments later, Wesleyan senior guard Shaleen Bowman (Guilford, CT) countered with a 3-pointer, giving the visitors a seven-point lead.
The Jeffs rallied to cut the lead to 58-56 with just under two minutes to play when first-year forward Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) netted a basket off a lob pass. Shortly thereafter, Bowman hit a pair of free throws and rookie center Ashley Mastrangelo (Marblehead, MA) scored to seal the victory for the Cardinals.
Amherst placed three players in double figures - Latham, Walker and Russell, who finished with 16, 12 and 11 points, respectively. Bowman and junior guard Amy Posocco (Willington, CT) each tallied 16 to pace Wesleyan.
With the loss, Amherst falls to 9-5 overall while Wesleyan - ranked 24th in the nation - improves to 14-1 and extends its win streak to seven. On a historical note, Jeff senior point guard Sara Bozorg (Amherst, MA) had one steal and is now just one shy of equaling the Amherst career record of 190.
