THOUSAND OAKS, CA - After downing Occidental College on Friday night, the Amherst College women's basketball team edged host California Lutheran University, 85-77, to complete its two-game west coast road trip on Sunday. Jeff sophomore guard Shannon Russell (Shrewsbury, MA) scored a game-high 29 points, while rookie forward Katie Latham (Wakefield, MA) chipped in with 20 points and nine rebounds. Junior center Caitlin Farrell (Lafayette, CA) also pulled down a game-high 12 boards.
Amherst jumped out to an early lead after hitting all six of its first six shots to open the contest. However, the Regals battled back to even the score, 39-39, at the break. The two teams exchanged the lead several times in the second half before Amherst regained its shooting touch to pull ahead late and seal the victory.
First-year forward Lauren Stroot (Camarillo, CA) led the Regals with a career-high 27 points. With the victory, the Jeffs improved to 8-0 overall while California Lutheran fell to 1-9.
Amherst returns to action Saturday at 6 p.m. at NESCAC and Little Three rival Williams College.
