Amherst Softball Drops to Springfield in 2020 Opener

AMHERST, Mass. – In their first outing of the 2020 campaign, Amherst Softball hosted Springfield College where they dropped, 5-2, due to a late-inning rally by the Pride on Monday afternoon at Amherst Softball Field.

With both teams totaling seven hits, the Mammoths drop their season opener and move to 0-1. The Springfield Pride picks up a season opening win and moves to 1-0. 

With two scoreless innings, Amherst was first to get on the board after Megan Taketa '23 reached first on an error by the shortstop which scored Audrey Hansen '21 to put the Mammoths up 1-0.

In a two-out rally and in the following inning, Andrea Sanders '20 plated Scout Boynton '20 and pushed Nicole Trezza '21 to second in a two-out rally with a bunt single to go up 2-0.

In the fifth, Alexyss Conley tripled to place a runner in scoring position with Meghan Sastram coming up to bat. Sastram hit a high sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate Conley and cut the deficit to one.

Two innings later,  Jen Slane got on base via a walk and Hannah Salvietti pinch ran, stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. With a runner on third, Conley homered to left field to regain the lead for the Pride, 3-2, in the final inning.

A couple batters later, Emily Woznick singled to centerfield to score two more runs and put the visitors up 5-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Springfield's defense held off Amherst as Emma Cape '22 flied to center while Hansen and Kate Kopatic '20 grounded out to third base to cap off the day.

Autumn Lee '23 tallied two hits in three at-bats to pace Amherst, while five separate Mammoths notched one hit apiece. 

Talia Bloxham '22 opened with four innings pitched and allowed three hits as Danica Peterson '22 came into relief and dropped four hits to earn the loss.  

Amherst, who led up until the final inning, received RBI's from Taketa and Sanders.
