Ukanwa’s Role in Middlebury Sweep Garners NESCAC Award

AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College senior pitcher Lorena Ukanwa has been recognized as the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Pitcher of the Week, announced by the league office Monday afternoon.

Ukanwa played a huge part in Amherst's three-game sweep over Middlebury this weekend, which secured the #3 seed in next weekend's NESCAC tournament for the Mammoths.

The senior hurler went 2-0 against Middlebury, tossing 13 innings without allowing an earned run and improving her overall record in the circle to 9-5.

Ukanwa limited Middlebury to one unearned over seven innings while striking out five in her first outing, a 4-1 win on Friday in the series opener. She then tossed a one-hit shutout for six innings in the final game of the weekend, striking out three in a 7-0 win for Amherst.

A season ERA of 2.04 for Ukanwa is good for sixth in the NESCAC, while her 96 strikeouts ranks second overall in the conference, as does her K/7 of 7.25.

Next up for Amherst is their NESCAC championship opener, which will come Saturday at 12:00 PM when the Mammoths play Bowdoin on the campus of Tufts University.
