CLERMONT, Fla. – An eight run third and fourth inning helped lift the Amherst softball team over Husson University (8-5) before they fell to No. 2 Illinois Wesleyan in their second match up in Clermont on Wednesday evening, moving to 5-1 on the season.
The Mammoths have an early start on Friday (March 15th) when they face Stockton at 9:15 AM before taking on Ohio Wesleyan at 1:30 PM in their second to last day of competition.
Amherst vs. Husson
After a deadlocked pair of innings, Husson was first to strike in the top of the third. Bri Brochu singled to left field before advancing to second after Chloe Gorey grounded out to the pitcher right after. With a runner on second, Smith singled to left field to bring Brochu around, going up 1-0 after three.
However, the Eagles score incited a dominant answer as the Mammoths scored five in the bottom of the third to go up by four. With two on, Ronnie Falasco '21 doubled to left center to bring around Sage Innerarity '22 and Nicole Trezza '21 for the opening two runs. A two-out rally ensued, beginning with Sammy Salustri '19 who's single to right field advanced Audrey Hansen '21 to second and scored Falasco. Kyra Naftel '19 backed up Salustri with another single that brought Hansen around. Alyson Plaman '21 capped off the Mammoths run with an RBI shot to right field to put the team up 5-1 heading into the fourth.
Husson's Jen Jones walked to start off the top of the fourth. After a wild pitch and a passed ball, pinch runner Kasey Poligni found herself on third base with Kylie Kennedy on deck. After a fly out to left field by Tamara Aunchman, Kennedy grounded out to the second basemen to score Poligni.
With one on and one out in the bottom of the fourth, Falasco laced a shot to left that was mishandled by Husson which allowed Scout Boynton '20 to score from first base. Following the error, Hansen had a sacrifice fly to right field that brought home Falasco who tagged up on third base. The final score of the inning came on a double steal from the Mammoths as Andrea Sanders '20 stole home to put the Mammoths up 8-2 heading into the last two innings.
A double in the fifth and a two run homer in the sixth were not enough to bring Husson back into the game as the Mammoths notched their fifth victory on the season (8-5). Talia Bloxham secured her third victory after allowing seven hits and striking out four eagles while Sanders led the team with three hits on the evening.
Amherst vs. Illinois Wesleyan
In their second match of the day, Amherst dropped to No. 2 Illinois Wesleyan by a score of 8-0 for their first loss on the season.
Amherst held strong in the opening three innings, holding the Spartans from scoring and only giving up three hits. In the fourth, Mia Massaro broke the tie with a single that scored Shelby Fulk and Sydney Alery. Jillian Runyon continued the momentum with two outs when she singled to bring Kara Bischoff home, putting Illinois Wesleyan up 3-0 heading into the fifth.
After a hit by pitch, a walk, and a single the bases were loaded with Fulk heading to the plate. Fulk smashed a grand slam to further distance themselves from the Mammoths, putting them up 7-0. The Spartans scored once more in the sixth inning to cap off the day for both teams.
The Mammoths were limited to only three hits on the night through 20 at-bats. Lorena Ukanwa '19 receives the loss for the Mammoths, giving up 10 hits but striking out eight Spartans. Ally Wiegand moves to 2-0 this year after going six innings with seven strikeouts.
