Amherst Softball Touted for Academic Prowess

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Ten student-athletes of the Amherst College softball team earned Easton/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Academic honors, as recently announced by the organization.

2018 Graduates Ally Kido and Gina Pagan, seniors Lorena Ukanwa, Annie Murphy, Kyra Naftel, and Sammy Salustri, juniors Scout Boynton and Kate Kopatic, and sophomores Ronnie Falasco and Alyson Plaman were all recognized.

Athletes who achieve a 3.50 or better GPA on a 4.00 scale during the 2017-18 season are named as NFCA Scholar Athletes. Ten of the team's seventeen members picked up the honor for their work in the classroom.

With 1,600 honorees, NCAA Division III had the most student-athletes recognized out of the three collegiate athletic divisions.

The NFCA also recognizes the top 100 academic teams (by overall GPA) each fall through the Easton/NFCA Top 10 Academic Team program. Amherst placed 15th in Division III—tied with NESCAC rival Williams College—with a team GPA of 3.570.

From eleven NESCAC schools, a total of five placed within the top 100 teams. Middlebury College (3.520) tied for 23rd, Hamilton College (3.517) placed 25th, and Bowdoin College (3.371) ranked 64th.

Out of over 400 institutions, Otterbein University earned the top spot on the Division III list with a team GPA of 3.751
