LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced 360 players chosen for the 2018 Division III All-Region Teams earlier this month, and four members of the Amherst College squad were recognized for their achievements on the field this year.
Pitcher Lorena Ukanwa '19 was named as a member of the First Team for the New England Region. Fellow hurler Gina Pagan '18 snagged a Second-Team nod, while catchers Ronnie Falasco '21 and Kate Kopatic '19 each garnered Third Team accolades.
All four members of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) All-Conference teams, these All-Region selections were part of an Amherst squad that went 29-8 this year and reached the final of the NCAA Williamstown Regional.
Ukanwa was one of the most dominant pitchers in the country, posting a 17-2 record in the circle and leading the NESCAC with 155 strikeouts in 116.1 innings pitched, a K/7 rate of 9.33. She finished the year with an earned run average of 1.68 and threw seven complete games and six shutouts.
The other half of Amherst's one-two punch, Pagan finished her career with a 12-6 record and 12 complete games, leading the team with 120.1 innings pitched. She posted a 2.33 earned run average and struck out 106 batters on the season.
Falasco led the Mammoths with eight home runs despite only having 76 at-bats on the season. She hit .421 and slugged .868, both of which would be good for second-best in the NESCAC. Falasco was two-time NESCAC Player of the Week and finished the year with sixteen hits and fourteen runs scored in her final ten games.
Kopatic batted .377 at the dish, smacked five home runs and drove in 27 runs for Amherst. She had twelve multi-hit games this year, including a 4-4 performance in Florida in a 9-1 win over SUNY Geneseo. As a catcher, she carried a .994 fielding percentage, making just one error in 35 games played.
