AMHERST, Mass. – Audrey Hansen '21 hit a grand slam during a six-run third inning as the Amherst College softball team defeated Bates College 9-0 in five innings to open the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) tournament, hosted by the Mammoths.
Amherst, the top seed in the West Division and the #25 team in the country, improves to 27-5 and will play the winner of Bowdoin vs. Middlebury at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in the conference semifinals.
Hansen had three hits and scored two runs and was on base four times.
Aly Plaman '21 started off the scoring for the Mammoths in the bottom of the third. She smacked a two RBI double to right center to make it 2-0 Amherst. With the bases loaded in the same inning, Hansen's grand slam extended the Amherst lead to 6-0.
Sammy Salustri '19 added to the lead in the fifth with a ground out that scored a run and advanced Hansen and Annie McCluskey '20 in scoring position. Ronnie Falasco '21 clinched the run-rule game with a two-run single, scoring Hansen and McCluskey.
Falasco was 2-3 in the game, as was Plaman. Gina Pagan '18 finished the fifth inning of the game and struck out one Bobcat.
Kristen Pelletier (11-9) pitched a complete game for Bates. She allowed 13 hits, nine earned runs, and struck out eight.
Lorena Ukanwa (16-1) earned the win, allowing just two hits and struck out eight in four innings of work. Three Bobcats - Caroline Bass, Julia Panepinto, and Mary Collette, registered hits against Amherst.
Bates finishes their season with a 20-14 record and five victories in NESCAC play.
