Amherst Softball Pounds Smith in Non-Conference Twin Bill

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Amherst College didn't allow a run while scoring 21 themselves as the No. 7 Mammoths swept a non-conference softball doubleheader at Smith College on Wednesday afternoon.

Amherst (19-2) took the first game 9-0 in six innings, and followed that with a 12-0 five-inning win in the second contest.

Game 1: Amherst 9, Smith 0

Amherst had just two hits and one run through the first four innings, but they exploded for seven hits and sent 12 batters to the plate in the fifth, scoring eight runs to capture a lopsided victory.

Sammy Salustri '19 had three runs-driven in on two doubles, both of them in the top of the fifth inning.

Andrea Sanders '20 scored three times, once on a single by Audrey Hansen '21 to start the scoring in the third, and then on both of Salustri's doubles. She also drove in a pair of runs in that inning with a single to center field to push Amherst's advantage to 7-0.

Kyra Naftel '19, Alyson Plaman '21 and Annie McCluskey '20 all knocked in runs and scored in the rally.

Junior Lorena Ukanwa tossed a gem, striking out ten and allowing just three hits and no walks in five shutout innings. She improved to 11-0 on the year in the circle for Amherst.

Game 2: Amherst 12, Smith 0

The Mammoths wasted no time in the second game, scoring four runs in the first inning and tallying runs in each frame as they earned the five-inning victory.

RonnieMarie Falasco '21 hit a pair of home runs and drove home four batters. She pounded a two-run shot in the first inning, then blasted a solo homer in the fourth to make it 10-0 Amherst before a sacrifice fly to end the scoring.

Kate Kopatic '20 also homered and also drove in a run with a double to center field to start the scoring barrage in the opening frame.

Gina Pagan '18 and Emily Lachtara '21 combined to allow just two hits and two walks in five innings. Pagan struck out seven batters while improving to 8-2 on the season.

Kopatic and Sanders were both 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. McCluskey was 3-3 at the plate with two runs scored, while Salustri had two more hits and drove in two more runs.

The Mammoths head into a weekend series against rival Williams College on an eight-game winning streak. Amherst (19-2, 5-0 NESCAC) play a single game at Williams on Friday at 5:00 pm before the Ephs come to town on Saturday for a Senior Day doubleheader, beginning at 12:00 pm.
