Softball Downs Little Three Rival Wesleyan, 6-1

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Amherst Softball team remains undefeated in the NESCAC West Division after picking up another conference victory to Little Three Rival, Wesleyan, 6-1, Friday afternoon at Wesleyan University.

With the victory, Amherst improves to 20-6 overall, 7-0 in conference action, while Wesleyan falls to 9-14 on the season, 0-3 in NESCAC play. The two teams will complete the three-game series in a twin bill tomorrow, Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. 

After three quick scoreless innings, the Mammoths struck first as Ally Kido '18 singled to shortstop and moved to second on an Alena Marovitz '17 hit-by-pitch. Kate Kopatic '20 singled to left before Julia Turner '19 ripped a two-out bases-clearing triple to take a 3-0 edge.

Still holding the Cardinals scoreless, Amherst tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth to extend its lead, 6-0. Sammy Salustri '19 singled to right and moved to second on a Kyra Naftel '19 bunt single. Kido used a hit-by-pitch to load the bases before Marovitz blasted a two RBI double off the right center fence. With two outs, Kopatic notched her second hit of the contest for an RBI single.

Following a 1-2-3 inning on both sides, the Cardinals threatened with a Rielly Wieners leadoff hit-by-pitch. In to pinch run, Jo Jo Diaz took third on Jamie Hom's single up the middle before Hom moved into scoring position a pitch later. Diaz took advantage of a passed ball to tally Wesleyan's lone run of the contest. 

Lorena Ukanwa '19 struck out two of the final three batters in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 6-1 victory for the Mammoths. Gina Pagan '18 (13-3) earned the win in the circle tossing five complete innings, allowing three hits and fanning six. 


• Amherst held a 9-4 advantage in hits in the outing.
• Tuiskula and Kopatic led the Mammoth's offense going 2-for-4 at the dish, while five other players contributed with a hit.
• Pagan leads all NESCAC pitchers in strikeouts with 101.
