Mammoths Run-Rule Middlebury in 5 Innings, 11-1

MIDDLEBURY, VT. – The Amherst College softball team picked up its fourth NESCAC West Conference victory with a 11-1 five-inning mercy against host Middlebury College Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Amherst improves to 15-6 on the season, 4-0 in conference play, while Middlebury falls to 6-5 overall, 0-1 in conference. The Mammoths and Panthers will face off for a doubleheader tomorrow, Sunday, April 9 at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.

After a scoreless two innings, the Mammoths blew the contest open with an eight-hit, 10-run effort. Sammy Salustri '19 was awarded first base on a catcher's interference call to lead off the top of the third frame. Julia Turner '19 reached on a fielder's choice to the Panther's shortstop before Lauren Tuiskula '17 loaded the bases on a walk.

Andrea Sanders '20 and Ally Kido '18 ripped a RBI singles to left field to give Amherst a 2-0 edge. Senior Alena Marovitz blasted a bases-clearing triple down the left field line to extend the lead by five. Annie McClusky '20, Turner, and Tuiskula added RBI singles before the inning was retired to give the Mammoths a 10-0 advantage. 

Holding the Panthers scoreless after four, Amherst added another insurance run at the top of the fifth. Tuiskula gave Amherst an 11-0 lead when she singled on a bunt to the pitcher and came around the score on a passed ball.

The Panthers notched two of its three hits in the bottom of the fifth to tally its only run of the game.

Gina Pagan '18 picked up her 10th win of the season, allowing one run on three hits and striking out 10 batters faced in five innings.


• Tuiskula was 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored, while Kido was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.
• Every batter in the Mammoths starting lineup notched at least one hit in the outing to out hit the Panthers 12-3.
• The five-inning victory marks the Mammoths fifth mercy of the season.
