MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Jackie Buechler '17 pitched a complete game shutout as the Amherst College softball team claimed a 4-0 win on the road Friday night against Wesleyan University.
The Jeffs improve to 15-11 overall and 4-6 in the NESCAC following the win. The loss marks the fifth straight for the Cardinals as they drop to 12-16-1 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
Brianna Cook '16 led the team offensively as she went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI, while Kelsey Ayers '15 finished 2-for-4 from the plate with a run scored. Three others registered a single to bring the Jeffs' total to seven hits. Buechler did not allow a run in a complete game effort, and surrendered just four hits while striking out three batters.
Wesleyan's offense was highlighted by a double from Susan Pardo, as she finished 1-for-2 with a walk. Jill Gately, Rielly Wieners and Jamie Hom each hit for a single. Julie McDonald tossed a complete game as well and allowed just two earned runs (four total) on seven hits and four strikeouts.
After three scoreless innings, Amherst got on the board in the top of the first. Cook hit a lead-off single to center field to start the rally. After reaching second on a wild pitch, she advanced to third following an infield single by Caroline Sealander '15. Alena Marovitz '17 then walked to load the bases. After consecutive outs, an infield error by Wesleyan brought home Sealander and Marovitz as the Jeffs took a 2-0 lead.
The pitching battle resumed over the next three innings, until Amherst increased its lead to four in the top of the seventh. With no runners on and two outs, Kelsey Ayers '15 singled to first base, Ally Kido '18 singled to left field and Cook tripled to center field to clear the bases.
Pardo doubled to left field to lead off the seventh, but Buechler retired the next three batters to secure the win.
Both squads return to the field tomorrow to conclude the weekend series with a doubleheader at the Amherst College Softball Field. Prior to the start of game one, the Jeffs will honor their five-member senior class. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
