AMHERST, Mass. – Despite outhitting Hamilton College, 7-4, the Amherst College softball team dropped a 3-2 NESCAC West matchup Sunday afternoon at the Amherst College Softball Field.
With the loss, the Jeffs fall to 13-11 overall and 3-6 in the conference, while the Continentals improve to 12-14 and 5-4.
Alyssa Sherwill '15 led all hitters with three hits, as she went a perfect 3-for-3 with a double. Ally Kido '18 recorded a double as well, and went 2-for-3 from the plate, while three others registered singles. Jackie Buechler '17 started in the circle and tossed three innings, allowing one run on three hits and struck out three. Gina Pagan '18 entered in the fourth and was credited with the loss after surrendering two runs on two hits in two innings. Lauren Tuiskula '17 tossed the final two innings and did not allow a run or hit, while striking out two.
Hamilton was led offensively by Talia Mercado with a 2-for-4 performance and a run scored. Oliva Gozdz and Daphne Assimakopoulos each recorded a hit as the visitor's totaled four on the day. Zoe Singer pitched the first three innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits and one strikeout. Kelly Leonard earned the win and tossed the final five innings. She allowed one run on five hits.
After two scoreless innings, the visitor's got on the board first in the top of the third. Phoebe Collins walked to lead off the inning. She later stole second, advanced to third on an infield groundout and scored on a wild pitch as the visitor's took a 1-0 lead.
However, the Jeffs retaliated in the bottom half of the inning. Sherwill hit a leadoff single through the left side of the infield. Idalia Friedson '15walked on the next at-bat, and Kelsey Ayers '15 reached first on an infield error by Hamilton. After a wild pitch, pinch runner Bailey Plaman '18 was tossed out at home while runners advanced to second and third. Donna Leet '15, the next batter, drove home Friedson with an infield groundout to tie the game at 1-1.
Hamilton regained the lead in the top of the fourth, and added another run in the top of the fifth to go ahead by two. With the bases loaded in the fourth, Collins hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Ellie Kiernan. The following inning, with two outs and the bases loaded, Julia Carpenter was hit by a pitch to bring home Mercado for the game-winner.
The Jeffs rallied in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn't enough. After three singles from Ashleigh Rutherford '16, Caroline Sealander '15 and Kido, respectively, Miranda hit a sacrifice fly to right field to cut the deficit to one, 3-2. The following inning, Sherwill led off with a single through the middle, and advanced to second on an infield groundout on the following at-bat, but three straight outs put the game away.
The Purple & White return to the field Wednesday, April 22 and will host Elms College. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
