AUBURN, Mass. – Kelsey Ayers '15 hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Amherst College softball team held off a late comeback attempt by Brandeis University to earn a 3-2 win Friday night at the Pappas Complex in Auburn, Mass.
With the win, the Jeffs improve to 9-6 overall on the season as they drop the Judges to 8-10.
After Brandeis tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh, Ayers drove in Ally Kido '18 for the game-winning run in the bottom half of the inning. The senior finished 2-for-4 from the plate to lead the team offensively, as Donna Leet '15 also recorded two hits and went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Four others recorded one hit each as the Jeffs totaled eight as a team.
Jackie Buechler '17 earned the starting nod in the circle and pitched a gem for the Jeffs as she tossed six scoreless innings, striking out five and surrendering just five hits. Gina Pagan '18 earned the win and struck out three batters in the seventh inning without allowing an earned run.
The Judges were led by Amanda Genovese and Danielle Novotny at the plate as they went 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively. They each scored a run as well. Brandeis totaled seven hits in the game as three others hit safely. Samantha Wroblewski pitched 6.1 innings and allowed just three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.
After three scoreless innings, the Jeffs got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Leet led off with an infield single to shortstop. She advanced to second on the next at-bat, and stole third before a double through the right side by Miranda drove her in. The next batter, Alyssa Sherwill '15, hit a line drive triple over the right fielder's head to bring home Miranda as Amherst took a 2-0 lead after four innings.
The Judges evened the score in the top of the seventh as Novotny singled through the left side of the infield with one out. After an Amherst error on the next at-bat, runners stood at first and second before Genovese stole second. The next batter struck out as Anya Kamber stepped to the plate with two outs and doubled to right center to bring in both runners.
In the top of the seventh, Kido stepped in as a pinch hitter and singled to right field to lead off the inning. She advanced to second on the next at-bat after a single by Lauren Tuiskula '17. After both runners stole second and third, Ayers singled to left field to claim the 3-2 win.
The Jeffs are scheduled to return to the field Wednesday, April 8 for a doubleheader at MCLA beginning at 3:30 p.m.
