AMHERST, Mass. - The Amherst College softball team swept its doubleheader Friday by defeating Macalester College, 10-3 and edging Calvin College, 8-7.
With the wins, the Jeffs improve to 8-2 overall this season. The Purple & White wrap up its 2015 spring break trip tomorrow and will play MIT at 9 a.m. followed by Luther at 11 a.m.
GAME 1: AMHERST 10, MACALESTER 3
Donna Leet '15 hit a three-run home run and Brianna Cook '16 recorded a grand slam to help lead the Jeffs to a seven-run win. Leet finished 2-for-2 and added a single, as Cook finished 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Alena Marovitz '17 and Ashleigh Rutherford '16 each recorded two hits as Marovitz went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Rutherford scored once and drove in a run. Kelsey Ayers '15, Idalia Friedson '15, Nicolette Miranda '17 and Ally Kido '18 all registered a hit as the Jeffs totaled 11 in the game. Ayers and Friedson also tallied a RBI each.
Jackie Buechler '17 started in the circle for Amherst and allowed three runs on four hits in six innings. She also struck out eight batters. Gina Pagan '18 pitched one inning in relief and struck out one without allowing a hit or run.
The Scots scored a run in the top of the first to take an early lead, but Leet put the Jeffs ahead with a three-run homer in the bottom half of the inning. In the bottom of the second, with the bases loaded, Ayers singled to right field to drive in Marovitz before Cook cleared the bases with a grand slam as Amherst took a commanding 8-1 lead. After Rutherford increased the lead to eight the following inning, a two-run home run by Macalester cut the deficit to six. However, the Purple & White added another score in the sixth inning en route to the 10-3 win.
GAME 2: AMHERST 8, CALVIN 7
Ayers led the Jeffs in the second game of their twinbill as she went 3-for-4 from the plate. Marovitz and Bailey Plaman '18 each recorded two hits, as Marovitz went 2-for-4 with a RBI and Plaman finished 2-for-3 with a single and a double. Kido drove in two runs on a 1-for-3 performance, and Cook went 1-for-4 with a RBI. Jackie Carr '18 went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in the first inning.
Pagan started for the Jeffs and Caroline Sealander '15 pitched 1.2 innings of relief as Amherst scored two runs in the first, one in the fourth, two more in the fifth and sealed the win with three runs in the seventh. Sealander earned the win in the circle.
