WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Amherst College softball team dropped a non-conference road game to Wellesley College on Monday afternoon, 5-1.
With the loss, the Jeffs fall to 15-7 overall on the year while the Blue improved to 18-9.
Kaitlin Silkowitz '14 led the Jeffs with three hits (3-for-4) and scored once. Lauren Tuiskula '17 started on the mound for Amherst and pitched a complete game, allowing five runs on six hits.
Ashton Coleman '17 was a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI and a walk to lead the home team while Emilyrose Havrilla '15 went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Wellesley got a complete game effort from senior pitcher Lindsay Johnson, who improved to 10-6. The Blue overcame a 1-0 deficit by tallying one run in the fifth and a four runs in the sixth.
Amherst jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning. Silkowitz led off with a bunt and later crossed home when Donna Leet '15 singled to center field. However, the Jeffs were held scoreless the rest of the game en route to the loss.
Wellesley's Abby Casey '15 scored the tying run from first-base on a double from Ashton Coleman '17 in the fifth and the Blue put together a four-run sixth to seal the game. The go-ahead run was knocked in by Jennifer Migliore '14 on a hit-by-pitch, and Coleman contributed again in the sixth with a two-RBI single.
Amherst threatened in the top of the seventh, but Johnson was able to escape unscathed. The Jeffs loaded the bases with a hit-by-pitch, error, and a single before Johnson struck out the game's final batter.
Amherst is back in action on Wednesday as they head to Smith College for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
