Smith scored in the first two innings Monday to take an early 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, Brittney Blokker '17 hit an infield single and later crossed home following a single, a fielder's choice and a Jeff error.
The Pioneers tacked on two more runs in the second. Giordano hit a bunt single with one out. She advanced to second on the next at-bat with a single from Zimmerman. Both runners scored two batters later when Brown doubled to left center.
Amherst finally broke the no-hit bid in the top of the sixth. Trailing 4-0, Ayers singled to left field for the visitor's first hit. On the next at-bat, Cook singled to right field as Ayers advanced all the way to third. She then scored when Buechler grounded out to short. However, Amherst couldn't rally in the seventh as Smith held on for the three-run win.
The Jeffs return to action tomorrow, Tuesday, Apr. 22 to continue a suspended game against Wesleyan beginning at 5 p.m. The Jeffs trailed 7-6 in the fifth inning before play was halted.
