Jeffs Go 0-2 on Day Two of Spring Trip

FORT MYERS, FL – The Amherst College softball team dropped to 2-2 on the season with a pair of losses Monday evening in day two of the 2010 Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. After scoring 21 runs on Sunday, the Lord Jeffs suffered a 3-1 loss to Wheaton and a 4-0 setback to Worcester State.

Amherst put on a hitting display in Sunday's victories over New Paltz State and Wooster, but the Lord Jeffs' bats were silenced today. Wheaton and Amherst remained scoreless through five innings, but Kristen Hunt belted a solo home run to left center in the top of the sixth to give the Lyons a 1-0 lead. Wheaton added a pair of unearned runs in the seventh, and the Jeffs managed to get only one back in the final frame.

Senior Alex Chang-Graham (San Carlos, CA) struck out seven and allowed seven hits in 7.0 innings, but the Jeffs were held to only four hits of their own. Sophomore Annemarie Iker (Mill Valley, CA) broke up a no-hitter with a one-out single to left field in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Carly Dudzik (Darien, CT) added a single in the sixth, while first-year Reilly Horan (Darien, CT) doubled to left center and junior Sam Presnal (Belchertown, MA) reached on an infield single in the seventh inning. Horan scored Amherst's only run on a sacrifice fly by junior Jill Masi (Stamford, CT).

The second game was much of the same, as first-year Theresa Kelley (Los Angeles, CA) pitched well but received little support from Amherst's bats. Kelley allowed four runs—two of which were earned—on three hits, striking out four batters in the complete-game effort. The Jeffs committed five errors and managed only five hits, all of which were singles. Senior Jackie Tyler (Ridgewood, NJ) went 3-for-4 with a stolen base, with Dudzik and Horan accounting for the other two hits. Worcester State picked up the eventual winning run in the second inning, adding one in the third and two in the fifth.

The Lord Jeffs will take on SUNY Fredonia and Polytechnic Institute of New York Tuesday at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
