AMHERST, Mass. – Capturing the top spot at the New England Regionals on Nov. 10 to earn an automatic qualifying bid to the 2018 NCAA Championships, the eighth-ranked Amherst College men's cross country team is set to compete in the national meet for the ninth time in program history, and fifth consecutive season, after placing fourth in Division III in 2017.
Thirty-two teams were selected to participate at the NCAA's, with the top-two seven person teams from each of the eight regions (16 teams) earning automatic qualifying bids and 16 teams garnering at-large bids. In addition, fifty-six individuals, the first seven student-athletes from each region who are not a part of a qualifying team, also received bids to compete.
Capturing four team titles and yet to fall outside of the top-four in five races against D3 competition this fall, the Mammoths opened the year with a first place finish at the Little III Championships on Sept. 8 before logging fourth overall at the 16-team Purple Valley Classic on Sept. 22. Amherst then captured 22nd at the multi-division Paul Short Classic to close out the month of September. Taking first overall in both races in October, the Mammoths claimed the top spot at the 27-team Connecticut College Invite on Oct. 13 before successfully defending their NESCAC crown on Oct. 27. The Mammoths confirmed their return to the national meet two weeks later on Nov. 10, earning the team title at the New England Regionals to earn a team automatic qualifying bid.
Amherst is set to have a good mix of young talent and experienced runners at this season's NCAA Championship, with five of the 10 traveling Mammoths' harriers having competed in the national meet a season ago. An All-American in 2017 after placing 33rd (24:54.48) at the national meet, Clark Ricciardelli '20 enters the weekend looking to once again make a big impact on the scoresheet, while Cosmo Brossy '19 and Spencer Ferguson-Dryden '20 will look to improve on 25:24.65 (82nd) and 25:33.48 (111th) marks, respectively. Tucker Meijer '19 (25:34.18 / 112th) and Kristian Sogaard '19 (26:00.91 / 191st) round out Amherst runners with NCAA experiences, while Estevan Velez '20, Ajay Sarathy '21, Braxton Schuldt '21, Bill Massey '21 and Matthew Bradley '22 enter the mix as newcomers to the NCAA Championship.
Hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, the men's 8-kilometer race is slated to begin at 1:15 PM eastern time this Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wis.
